Making The Most Of Coastal San Diego Properties

By William Richardson

For people who have never been there, California often seems like another country entirely instead of just another state on the American continent. They may have mental pictures of surfers, celebrities, sunny days, and lots of hot, dry weather. For others, the west coast is somewhere they think of living and putting down permanent roots. People with plenty of financial resources may even be considering coastal San Diego properties.

Beachfront properties almost always sell for premium prices. This real estate seems to be unfazed by property value fluctuations and stock market reversals. There will never be any more of it, so prices will rise, but generally do not go down. If ocean real estate is a little too rich for you, the city of San Diego, CA can offer many attractive options.

California beachfront living is not for everybody. Commutes to work can be difficult, the weather can be volatile, and the relative solitude is not to everyone's taste. A lot of people prefer more traditional neighborhoods and the way seasons transition from summer to winter in other parts of the country.

There are a lucky minority who have the means to enjoy the lifestyle that comes with the sun and surf. You might be a devoted fisherman with plenty of free time to hunt trophy bass or halibut out on the deep sea. Athletes, such as surfers, will certainly be able to take advantage of the famous waves of San Diego's beaches. If walking, running or riding on the beach is something you love, this may be the place for you.

Owning real estate on the southern California coast usually comes with a hefty price tag. You may be one of the lucky few that inherited property from a wealthy relative, but most will have to be prepared to part with several million dollars, at the least, for the privilege of calling one of these beaches home. Of course, these homes will come with every luxury imaginable.

There are usually plenty of beachfront condominiums to pick from if you are not ready to put down several million dollars. Condos in this area are still pricey, but more affordable than their single family neighbors. You will also have a lot of the same amenities without paying quite the same high price. Exercise rooms, pools, spas, valet and housekeeping services may be included in the price of a beach condo.

For those who are able to live on the coast full time, renting a vacation beach house might be just the thing. Most come fully furnished down to the bedding, pots, pans, and silverware. The cost of such a rental unit varies widely and will depend on where the property is located, how large it is, and what other amenities come with it. You could even spread the expense by inviting others to stay with you.

San Diego can be a great place to live. It offers a wide variety of choices whether you decide to own a home or rent one for a special getaway vacation.
